Objective
Journey Into Manhood, a book based on a true story from the Love+Radio podcast, aims to depict the internal struggles of the LGBTQ community through layout, visuals, and text. Garnet, raised in a devout Catholic family, discovered his homosexuality early but faced conflicts due to religious and societal pressures. Believing himself mentally ill, he attempted self-therapy. However, he realized he couldn't change.
Approach
This book describes how the LGBT+ community struggles to assert their identity in society. Like Garnet, he grapples with self-acceptance, experiencing torment and depression as he tries to change his sexual orientation. In representing the LGBT community's pain, I utilized stark black-and-white patterns and handwriting fonts for a raw, uncomfortable feel. Decoratively, I incorporated "x" marks over intimate moments in LGBT couples' images, symbolizing societal rejection and sadness.
